Music is composed of numerous theoretical concepts which work together to produce various sounds. For academics to gain a true appreciation and understanding for music, educators are responsible for expanding their knowledge in regards to various concepts. For individuals with minimal knowledge in regards to music the development of understanding in regards to duration may present some difficulties. Duration encompasses different mathematical concepts as it focuses on counting the number of beats within a measure. Duration involves the identification of various musical note values which can be connected to the construction and deconstruction of fractions. For academics that struggle with math duration may appear as intimidating as it presents music in a more complex, unfamiliar manner. In addition, the understanding of time signatures may present numerous difficulties. During my own personal experience studying musical theory I always found myself struggling with the concept of time signatures, especially when dealing with the more complex ones. As a future educator of music I will aim to develop effective methods of instruction to demonstrate the concept of duration. Similar to the activities presented in yesterday’s lesson I will focus on incorporating effective instructional methods to satisfy the learning needs of various students.
During my endeavours as a piano instructor I have created a multitude of instructional lessons and activities to develop students theoretical and practical knowledge. One of the more difficult concepts students continue to encounter is the understanding of value and amount of various musical notes. Without a thorough understanding of this students will struggle as they continue their academic studies. I thoroughly enjoyed using the straws to represent different note values as it allowed for the physical and visual manipulation to represent different values. Throughout my academic journey I have come to the realization that I am a kinetic learner, in order to gain the most out of a lesson I need to physically and visually manipulate what is being presented.
