The dramatic arts and dance become a fantastic outlet to demonstrate various curricular concepts for academics through their movements, expressions and reactions. As an educator it is our responsibility to develop a nurturing learning environment where all types of learners are welcomed and supported. Throughout my practicum and classroom experiences I have observed that there are diverse types of learners which make up a classroom. As an educator, to succeed and provide the most meaningful learning opportunity for students we cannot focus on satisfying one particular type of learner. Instead, we must learn the strategies and practices that work best for the greatest amount of learners so that all may succeed. When we provide all learners with equal opportunity to information and learning we are better able to provide the required care and nurture for all.
Throughout our drama and dance classes we have participated in various activities which demonstrate how to integrate different theories behind curricular units. The idea of integrating drama and art into every day study is fascinating for it demonstrates how educators can make learning fun, innovative and interactive for all. Through my academic journey as a student I remember being a visual, kinestitic learner. I remember experiencing greater success when I could physically manipulate or experience a concept. Having the opportunity to participate in these activities have demonstrated to me how I can provide this type of learning for students to allow them to experience greater success. Additionally, through these physical interactions I have recognized that I gave greater success remembering theories or ideas presented. An example of was when we learned about the digestive system, we acted out how this system works and I was able to remember this concept with great ease.
As a twenty-first century educator I recognize the importance of breaking down the barrier that drama and dance is its own separate unit of study. Instead when we teach through the arts we allow students greater opportunity to succeed and enjoy what they are learning. During our activities I have enjoyed using my body and things around me to express my understanding and beliefs towards a subject of study.
