Art in the Classroom

This assignment required teacher candidates to develop a portfolio that represents who we are. I have always been a fan of art, I find it relaxing and a fantastic outlet to turn to during times of darkness and struggle. Art to me is something which gives users the power to express their thoughts and opinions without intrusion from others. The creation of a piece of art steams from an individuals sense of the world around them and their ability to identify to a particular medium. Through the completion of this activity I recognized both my strengths and weaknesses when working with different mediums of art. The engagement of art has the captivating power to provide peace of mind for those who are struggling with different mental, physical and/or emotional illnesses. While engaging in this studio activity the personal technique which I discovered was achieving complete peace of mind. This assignment focused on an individuals ability to express their feelings, passions and admirations through different mediums to demonstrate to a larger audience. While completing this assignment, I listened to music, in a quite room with no other distractions around so that I could better connect and self reflect. As a student I recognize the importance of achieving a momentary escape from reality in order to better express and convey feelings and emotions. When introducing students to art activities I will emphasize the importance of achieving mental bliss so that they can better represent who they are through their art. Additionally this assignment allowed me to come to the realization of the importance of developing an initial plan when creating a piece of art so that if something does not work it can be reworked. Rough work is essentially just as important as a good copy as it allows individuals to recognize how they can make something better. As a future educator I foresee myself explaining to academics the importance of rough work so that they are more likely to create a piece of work which encompasses what they mentally envision.

The employment of this activity, although more complicated and challenging was perhaps one of my preferred, more enjoyed tasks. I loved being given the opportunity to work with various hues and gain an understanding on how to successful blending together of primary and complimentary colours worked to create tertiary colours. I have never been given the opportunity to work with water colours and observe first hand the shifting and changing of colours when blended together. This studio assignment provided individuals with the opportunity to expand knowledge, skill level and ability to work with water colours. Additionally, academics had the opportunity to study the contributing factors that create a hue, how much water is added, the proper cleaning or products, the drying time period etc. For skill level to increase students must be given the opportunity to work first hands with various mediums or art in order to build understanding. This assignment allowed for better recognition of the pairing together of colours and how it contributes to appeal. Additionally I loved being given the artistic freedom to create a symbol which best represents our interest and/or significant value. For mine, I decided to create elephants holding each others tails as they hold significant value for me. As a child, I recall my grandmother telling me that elephants were symbols or strength, luck and prosperity. As an educator it is important that during the more difficult times we always remain strong. We can never give up but instead remember that tomorrow hold new opportunities. This studio assignment is one which I foresee displaying within my future classroom as it will always act as a reminder of the struggles I have over come.

As a future educator we must work to inspire students to pursue and expand their artistic abilities. The incorporation of art programs and activities within regular schedule programs is essential to expanding academics sense of understanding of self and society. Without art we as a society would be lost for  their would be a lack of creativity. As leaders we must inspire students to become active members of the artistic community so they have the chance to feed their interests.
